After some major design issues, their minimalist, ultra-modern floating home is finally complete and it’s the perfect relaxing retreat they’ve always dreamed of. The build team faces delays as the harsh Oregon winter takes hold and a weight imbalance threatens to capsize the floating foundation. Fed up with her cramped city apartment, sportswear manager Marsha sets out to build a spacious two-story floating home on the idyllic Multnomah Channel near Portland, Oregon.

On route the floating ‘work of art’ attracts a lot of attention but finally it makes it to it’s new home with a float home community on Seattle’s Lake Union. A water loving couple builds a floating home on a canal, south of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The biggest challenge is getting the floating home to fit through the Netherland’s network of narrow and shallow canals, but somehow the home makes its way through the waterways. Their spectacular home includes a raised roof with a 360 sky view, a modern open plan living space and a wraparound deck to enjoy the surrounding countryside.

The interior is not complete and the painters hitch a ride and continue decorating on route under pressure to finish before they dock. Finally the floating apartment enters the canals of Amsterdam and docks at Roy and Rianne’s mooring site with stunning views of the capital and the surrounding waters. But because those properties are not plentiful - and what is available can be very expensive - homebuyers are expanding the definition of waterfront to include not just the "front" but also the back and sides.

Work begins with the huge steel hull, which Les gives a traditional high-gloss paint job before fitting a high-spec interior. This includes a bathroom with a bathtub – something never normally fitted on a boat – which causes Les a few headaches. After launching the vast vessel, brand new skippers Janet and Dwayne have to navigate it up a busy waterway to their permanent mooring, without crashing into the bank or other boats. Once safely docked, Janet and Dwayne proudly show us the end result - a stunning and huge houseboat, bigger than almost anything else on the canal system. They have a luxurious master bedroom complete with en-suite and bath, as well as a spare double bedroom and additional shower. A spacious kitchen diner complete with wood worktops, and a six-seat breakfast bar makes for a comfy and luxurious heart of the home.

Joan is a floating home veteran but she’s taking the plunge and sinking her savings into a pair of brand new monster mansions worth a million dollars each. They hire award winning architect Richard Coutts to come up with a sleek modern single storey design with a roof terrace and floor to ceiling windows. The floating concrete base that the house will sit on is made in The Netherlands. The Dutch team must pour tons of concrete around a reinforced steel mesh to form a huge hollow box, weighing in at 40 tons! It is then loaded onto a special truck and driven to the ferry port in the nick of time, where it takes the short sea crossing to the UK. Once in Chichester Marina, the team must lower it using a heavy duty crane, into the water in a tense operation. Not knowing whether it will float evenly, they release the cables and it sits perfectly in the water.

With help from an expert engineer in building floating micro homes, Laurence hopes to fit out the interior himself and re-design the layout with an open living plan. When it finally comes down to the final stages of the build, snow and flood warnings add to the already challenging task of getting the home to his marina.
